CASSEL

When we return to the library, Leland, Jackson, and Henry all head straight into the building as Jeremy takes Nova out to use the grass.

He was quiet the whole car ride home, so I’m worried he’s anxious about something he’s not telling us. Maybe this isn’t the way he was hoping to do things. He is a police officer, after all, so he might be more adamant about arresting them than using our methods. “Are you alright?” I ask.

Jeremy turns his focus to me and gives me a warm smile that makes me love his attention. “Yeah, I’m fine,” he says, even though he might not be too fine after the kick to the nuts he suffered through. “What about you? You fell into the grass after Darnell was dragged away from the road.”

I give him a wave like I have to assure him I’m perfect as I lean against the brick wall of the old library. “Oh yeah, totally fine. Better than fine. Did you see how I jumped on him? Majestic, right?” I ask while trying to sound as serious as I can.

Jeremy grins at me, clearly having seen my jumping power. “It was rather impressive. He thought a cougar had landed on him.”

I can’t hold the grin back any longer, rather pleased with myself for drawing his attention away from what he’d been focused on. “Right? It was like riding a bucking bronco.”

His grin is matching mine now. “Even after that, you’re really going to go through with all of this with me?”

I turn to face him before stepping into him. “Of course. I’ve done many things in my past that I’m not proud of, so maybe this can help make up for it for both of us. As long as you promise to pay me at the end.”

“What do I owe you?” he asks.

“Your shirt, pants, and… your…” I can’t keep a straight face any longer and start laughing as I turn away instead. “I’m joking, you don’t owe me anything.”

“Are you sure? I mean, if you want to sniff my shirt, I’m not going to stop you,” he says.

I shake my head, but honestly, I deserved that. “No! That’s not what I meant!”

He grins at me. “I know that’s not what you meant. But I did already promise you a date for getting us out of Judas’s place alive,” he says as his eyes drop down to mine, his smile turning into something more serious. He catches my wrist and turns me to face him before stepping up into me, pressing me back against the wall as I look up and catch his eyes that lock on to mine.

I can’t stop watching him closely while hoping for something more. Anything more. “You did promise me a date.”

“And where would you like to go?” he asks as his eyes flicker down to my lips.

“I feel like a suave man could take me on a date right here and now,” I tease.

“Well… I’ve definitely never claimed to
